Through sweeping budget cuts and mass layoffs, the erosion of the administrative state has started to impact the delivery and scope of services relied on by millions of Americans. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) operates with reduced readiness, national parks face staffing shortages, people lose their healthcare and food assistance benefits run out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Michael Sainato<\/strong> looks at how food banks all over the country brace for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/sep\/30\/food-banks-trump-snap-cuts?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">the impact of the largest cuts to the government\u2019s food assistance program for low-income people in US history&nbsp;<\/a>.&nbsp;<strong>Leah Douglas<\/strong> and <strong>Nathan Frandino<\/strong> examine what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/states-end-nutrition-education-programs-after-trump-cuts-2025-09-30\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">essential programs States are forced to cut<\/a>. One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-09-13\/another-california-county-is-losing-its-only-hospital-after-feds-refuse-to-step-in\">California county is losing its only hospital<\/a>. <strong>Ana B. Ibarra<\/strong> examines the impact on the residents who are being left without local emergency care.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>More than 24 million Americans receive subsidized health insurance and will see their premiums jump by the end of the year unless Republicans agree to a deal proposed by the Democrats. Couples are even considering divorce to keep their insurance premiums somewhat affordable, reports <strong>Sarah D. Wire<\/strong> in her article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/09\/25\/potential-government-shutdown-over-obamacare-tax-credits\/86186415007\/\">These people have found their health care at the center of a shutdown showdown.<\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cSmall business owners, self-employed people and early retirees are among the 4 million Americans who could lose the tax credit &#8211; and maybe their health insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The National Park system is struggling to keep the gigantic land areas clean, protected and its visitors safe.&nbsp; With more than 25% of the workforce gone, essential climate, wildlife and ecology research can no longer be conducted and that \u201cthe real crisis is happening behind the scenes\u201d.&nbsp;<strong>Kylie Mohr<\/strong> argues that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/2025\/09\/national-parks-maintenance-research-trump\/684379\/\">Trump is setting the National Parks up to fail,<\/a>in her story for <em>The Atlantic.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>S<\/em>ome 300,000 federal workers have lost or left their jobs, one in eight employees. <strong>WIRED<\/strong> \u201cspoke with more than 200 federal workers in dozens of agencies to learn what happened as the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) tore through their offices.\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/oral-history-doge-federal-workers\/\"> The Story of DOGE<\/a> is a distressing investigation into how the callous and indiscriminate job cuts affected people in dozens of agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DOGE was only the beginning, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.project2025.observer\/en\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.project2025.observer\/en\">Project 2025 tracker<\/a> shows, many of the objectives have not yet been achieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8230;IN OTHER NEWS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><br>On Tuesday, Ronald Reagan\u2013appointed <strong>U.S. District Judge William Young<\/strong> ruled that the Trump administration unlawfully targeted students for their pro-Palestinian activism. In a blistering <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.mad.282460\/gov.uscourts.mad.282460.261.0.pdf\">opinion<\/a>, unusual in its style and substance, he calls out the administration\u2019s \u201cfull-throated assault on the First Amendment\u201d and discusses the state of the country. \u201cIt\u2019s a sign of the times that a federal judge would write an opinion like this,\u201d <strong>Steve Vladeck<\/strong>, Supreme Court analyst and Georgetown Law professor. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/01\/politics\/william-young-legal-opinion-everyone-talking\">Judge Young is committing to writing what so many of us are thinking<\/a>.\u201d Judge Young also writes: \u201cICE goes masked for a single reason \u2014 to terrorize Americans into quiescence\u2026 To us, masks are associated with cowardly desperados and the despised Ku Klux Klan.
